63rd Annual Cleveland Art Prize
Upcoming art event at the Clevland Museum of Art honoring outstanding artists
“The art of a people is a true mirror to their minds” Jawaharlal Nehru,
This quote encapsulates the Cleveland Art scene. With the Cleveland Art Prize, CAP, being the mirror from which Cleveland reflects its great talents in the various genres of design, film, theater, visual art, fiction, and music comes together.
In just two weeks' time one of the most talked about events will be happening here. The Cleveland Arts Prize awards ceremony, October 26th, will honor another year of amazing Cleveland area talent, highlighting the diversity, artistry, and music talents from our neighbors and the excellency they maintain.
Started in 1960 by the Women’s City Club, CAP boasts past winners such as the late Toni Morrison (CAP ‘78) and Phyllis Sloan (CAP ’82) for visual arts. Past winners including Poet Kisha Nicole Foster (CAP’19) who along with American Jazz trumpeter and big band leader Dominick Farinacci (CAP’22) will be performing. “Artistic Renaissance” are the words that come to mind when you view this year's winners. As the Cleveland Plain dealer coined the phrase New York’s the Big Apple, but Cleveland’s a Plum. The artistic talent of this area is on par with the big apple and boasts a surprising depth for a city in the Midwest. But don’t let this fool you. Cleveland's talent is bursting at the seams and this award ceremony is here to highlight the artistic gems that have crystalized here for over a half a century.
This year’s winners come from many artistic disciplines as follows:
Atefeh Farajolahzadeh (Visual Arts)
Stephanie Ginese (Literature)
Dana Jessen (Music)
Dr. Jacinda Walker (Design)
Janet Macoska (Visual Art)
CAP Special Prizes: Judaica curator and The Temple – Tifereth Israel Gallery Director Susan Braham Kolestky
Martha Joseph Prize for Distinguished Service to the Arts: Richard S. Rogers
Barbara S. Robinson Prize for the Advancement of the Arts: Joseph P. and Nacy F Keithley
When asked by Effie Tsengas Nunes, Interim Executive Director, to cover this historic event as an artist I admit I am over the moon, not only to experience so much amazing talent in one room but also to meet all the winners past and present. This organization has given artists, artistic institutions, and cultural leaders an amplified voice in the Cleveland art scene. Taking place at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Thursday, October 26, with Kenny Crumpton of “Fox News in the Morning” as Master of Ceremonies and many past CAP winners performing, it truly will be a night to remember.
